The “Leonardo of the North” was more than just a gifted artist. He was a writer, clever businessman, and apt teacher of students, and a man passionately interested in attracted to the theology of Martin Luther. He did more than just create works of art for wealthy patrons; he also took advantage of the new technology of printing in order to bring his illustrations of the Bible to a wide audience of ordinary people. This biography focuses on Durer the man, rather than Durer the artist. Joyce once again helps us to understand a historical figure by showing us his childhood, family, friends, and hopes and fears. Filled with excerpts from Durer's own writings and illustrated with 30 of his most famous pieces. At the death of Albrecht Durer, Martin Luther wrote, “It is natural and right to weep for so excellent a man.”

The River of Grace  The Story of John Calvin

This is the only biography of Calvin available for young people. Joyce focuses on Calvin's childhood and youth, tracing his days at the university and the circumstances of his conversion. She traces his early and precocious leadership of the Protestants in France, and his flight to Basel, Strassburg, and Geneva when King Francis I began executing Protestants. The result is a warm and affectionate picture of the leader of the second generation of the Protestant Reformation. This is a book worth reading out loud to younger students; older students and adults will find it a valuable introduction and aid in understanding the author of the Institutes of the Christian Religion.

A Piece of the Mountain

Blaise Pascal was one of the most important scientists and mathematicians of the 1600s. Not only was he a brilliant scientist, but he converted to Christianity as an adult and became a devoted apologist for the Christian faith. Of special interest to homeschooling families, this book recounts the recognition of Blaise’s remarkable talents by his father. The provisions the elder Pascal made for his son’s education are among the earliest and most successful examples of home schooling. For Christians, the account of Pascal’s conversion is particularly moving, as well as Pascal’s immediate response of sharing the Gospel with his father, sisters, and the nobleman who was his financial patron. Written by a homeschooling mother. A great read-aloud for younger children.

Sir Isaac Newton is one of history’s most renowned scientists. He independently developed the mathematical technique known as Calculus, wrote a treatise on the properties of light and color that is still consulted by scientists, and worked out the mathematical details of the law of gravity. What is less well known is the depth of his Christian faith, and the amount of writing, speaking, and research he devoted to defenses of the tenets of Biblical belief. This book makes Newton come alive for readers. From the detailed account of the events that led to his conversion, his Christian faith plays a central role in this biography, as it did in his life.
